Golf team solid sixth at league qualifier

SOUTH WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- After many years of placing last in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Golf Qualifier, Colby College finished in a tie for sixth place and was just three strokes out of fifth place at the 2009 event.

The Mules had a two-day total of 628 to tie for sixth with Amherst College in the 10-team tourney. Colby had a Sunday score of 311 at Waubeeka Golf Links.

Colby's Harry Smith finished in a tie for 10th place overall after carding a team-best 76 on Sunday. He had a 74 in the opening round to finish with a two-day total of 150. Smith, a sophomore and the number one position player on the men's squash team, did not play on the golf team last year.

The Mules' Tripp Huber added a 77 after Saturday's 76 for a 153 total to place in a tie for 17th overall. Tom Lampert had a 161 total (81-80), Hans Noering had a 78 on Sunday for a 164 finish, and Sam Rouleau ended up with a 176 total.

Williams College won the qualifier with a score of 595. Hamilton College,  Trinity College, and Middlebury College were the other top four finishers and will compete with the Ephs in the NESCAC Golf Championships this spring.

Also on Sunday, Colby's Maureen Dunn competed in the Maine-Farmington Women's Invitational and had a score of 123.
