WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College golf team produced one of the best seasons ever for the program since the New England Small College Athletic Conference started having an all-conference team in 2000.
The Mules, after many years of finishing last in the league qualifier, took sixth place in 2009. The Mules also won the Colby Invitational and the Colby Classic last season.
The Mules open the season Saturday at the Waterville Country Club at noon in the Colby Invitational and then host the Colby Classic on Sunday at noon.
Harry Smith '12 earned NESCAC all-conference second team honors in his first year of playing collegiate golf. He became only the third Colby golfer since 2000 to earn all-league honors.
Tripp Huber '13 had the second-best score for the Mules last year at the league qualifier and heads into this year as Colby's top golfer after the preseason. Thomas Lampert '12 and Taggert Martin '13 also were strong last year and will be top-five golfers for head coach Jim Tortorella. Billy Pettengill '11, out for his first year of golf, should contribute right away.
First-years Nathan Ellis and Sam Kim should push for time in the top five.
