Handler on New England football team

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College senior Sam Handler (Campbell Hall/Beverly Hills, Calif.) was named to the New England Football Writers Select Division II/III Football All-Star Team on Wednesday.

Handler, who played on the defensive line for Colby, was recently named to the first team by the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Handler and five other NESCAC players made the New England writers team.

Handler finished tied for fourth in the NESCAC in sacks with 5.5 and led the Mules with nine tackles for loss among his 30 stops this past season. He also led the team in forced fumbles (3) and quarterback hurries (6). Handler finished his career with 113 tackles, including 23 for a loss, in three seasons. Handler’s best season statistically was 2007 with 51 tackles (second on team), 10.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

Handler was one of four players selected to the defensive line for the all-star team. The entire team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 11 at Casa di Fiore in Wilmington, Mass.
