Colby ends the season at 13-5 overall, losing only to top-10 teams. The Lions go to 15-4 overall and will meet top-ranked Trinity on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a regional final for a berth in the NCAA Final Four. Trinity coasted to a 19-2 win over Augustanta (Ill.) in the other second-round game.

Tess Petesch had three goals in her final game to lead the Mules, who had a 30-20 shot advantage and a 13-3 margin in ground balls. Three-time All-American Kate Pistel also played her final contest, scoring twice and dishing one assist to go over 150 career points. She finished her career with 110 goals and 41 assists for 151 points.

College of New Jersey used a four-goal run to take an 11-6 lead and then held off a spirited Colby comeback attempt over the final six minutes. Tess Petesch scored unassisted for the Mules with 24:29 to play in the game to cut the Lions' lead to 7-6. College of New Jersey scored four four straight goals from 24:01 to 14:46 to play to pull away for an 11-6 margin.

Kendal Borup had four goals and one assist to lead the Lions. Jillian Nealon finished with three goals, one assist, and a game-high seven draw controls.

Borup scored just 28 seconds after Petesch's goal to give College of New Jersey an 8-6 margin. Her shot deflected off Colby goalie Michelle Burt and rolled into the net as Burt dove back to try to clear it off the line. Jen Garavente made it 9-6 when she made a cut to the goal and took a nice pass from Cortney Natalicchio, who had beat a defender on the right side. Nealon was all alone on the left side of the cage for a goal after a nice dish from Garavente for a 10-6 margin. The Lions scored their final goal of the game with 14:46 to play when Lauren Karpovich tallied in front off a feed from Lauren Pigott as the Rams worked hard to control the ball with the lead.

The game stayed at 11-6 over the next nine minutes until Colby's Katie Griffin scored on a free-position shot with 5:32 to play. The Mules won the draw control and scored just 19 seconds later when Abby Hatch tallied and forced the Rams to call time with an 11-8 lead.

The Mules had a few chance to cut the margin to one goal over the next few minutes, but either turned the ball over or were stopped by goalie Kelsey Zinck. McKenna beat Zinck with 1:32 left in the contest off a pass from Eddy for the final goal of the contest. McKenna has 135 goals and 16 assists for 151 career points heading into her senior year in 2014. Eddy, meanwhile, led Colby in scoring this year with 21 goals and 31 assists for 52 points.

The Mules won the draw control after McKenna's goal and had two shot opportunities, the first by Griffin went wide and Zinck came up with a huge stop on Pistel off a free-position attempt. Zinck finished with nine saves in the second half and had 13 for the game.

Small goal runs marked the first half as the Lions took a 5-4 lead at intermission. The Rams started the game with goals from Nealon and Borup for a 2-0 lead with 16:01 to play. Pistel and Petesch immediately tied the game in a span of 1:10. Pistel beat a defender and ripped a shot into the back of the net, while Petesch scored on a tough angle shot after coming from behind the net.

The Rams scored the next three goals to go up 5-2 and take the lead for good. Borup scored in front off a nice lob pass from Nealon from behind the net with 10:22 left. Garavante tallied on a free-position shot with 5:26 remaining and Nealon scored from the left side off a dish from Borup with 3:46 to go.

Griffin cut to the net and took a pass from Pistel in front to make the score 5-3 with 2:25 left. The Mules then made it a tight 5-4 game at the break when Pistel went right, cut back to the left, and fired a hard shot past Zinck with only 41 seconds left.

Cortney Natalicchio scored just her third goal of the season for College of New Jersey when she drew a foul and tallied on a free-position shot just 1:21 into the second half for a 6-4 lead. Petesch made it 6-5 on another nifty shot after coming from behind the net. However, Borup used her size and strength to push the lead to 7-5 when she went right up the middle and scored while being closely guarded by a defender.

Burt finished with five saves, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls for the Mules. Eddy added a team-high three draw controls, while McKenna had two to end the season with a team-best 35. Meg Mooney added two ground balls and one caused turnover to lead the Mules in both categories (22 CT, tied with 25 GB).

The Mules meet the most decorated team in Division III women's lacrosse history in Saturday's second-round contest against The College of New Jersey at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity College. Defending national champion and unbeaten Trinity takes on Augustana in the first game at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The winners Saturday will play in a national quarterfinal game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Trinity. Webcast and live statistics for all three games will be available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/trinity/

College of New Jersey has won 12 national titles -- the first coming in 1985 and the last in 2006. The Lions have a 67-15 record in NCAA tourney history.

Meanwhile, Colby has played in the NCAA quarterfinal round the past three years. The Mules, though, have had their season end short of the NCAA Final Four all three years.

Colby has played well over the past few weeks, looking loose and comfortable in an easy 19-3 win against Lasell College in an NCAA opening round game. The lone setback in the past four games was an 11-10 loss to third-ranked Middlebury College in a NESCAC semifinal. Colby did have leads of 6-1 and 10-6 in the game.

Colby and College of New Jersey do have two things in common heading into Saturday's contest. Both teams have four losses on the season and all eight losses have come against teams ranked in the top 10. The Mules have fallen to top-ranked Trinity (8-4), twice to third-ranked Middlebury (14-6, 11-10), and once to eighth-ranked Bowdoin (11-10, 3 OT). The Lions have dropped their games to second-ranked Salisbury (11-5), fourth-ranked Cortland (15-13), fifth-ranked Gettysburg (11-10), and sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall (10-7).

Colby (13-4) is led in scoring by junior attacker Katharine Eddy, who has 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points. Lindsey McKenna, who earned her second All-American honor Thursday, reached 150 career points (134 goals, 16 assists) in the Lasell win and pushed her season totals to 46 goals and four assists for 50 points. Kate Pistel was honored with her third All-American honor Thursday and is third in scoring with 25 goals and 11 assists for 36 points. She is just two points shy of reaching 150 career points (108 goals, 40 assists).

The Mules continue to receive terrific scoring balance, with 12 players at 10 points or more. Dana Swaffield (18 goals, 10 assists), Alex Mintz (15 goals, 13 assists), Katie Griffin (18 goals, 6 assists), Tess Petesch (14 goals, 8 assists), Abby Hatch (9 goals, 8 assists), Sarah Lux (3 goals, 12 assists), Hilary Barr (8 goals, 6 assists), Sara Miller (9 goals, 2 assists), and Abby Hooper (8 goals, 2 assists) are other leading scorers.

Meg Mooney leads Colby in caused turnovers (21) and is tied for first with Kirsten Karis in ground balls (23). Karis leads all defenders with 17 draw controls and is second in caused turnovers (18). Lisa Hoopes has 15 caused turnovers, 18 ground balls, and 10 draw controls. First-year Brittany Chin has been a key factor late in the season with Colby's clearing efforts and has 17 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.

Colby's goalkeeping continues to shine, with Michelle Burt and Claire Dickson having fine seasons. Burt has played 671 minutes and owns a .544 save percentage and a 7.32 goals against average. She earned All-NESCAC honors along with Pistel, McKenna, Karis, and Eddy. Dickson has played 284 minutes and owns a save percentage of .567 and a 6.13 goals against average.

The Lions have scoring punch behind the play of Jillian Nealon (45 goals, 37 assists) and Jen Garavente (58 goals, 16 assists). TCNJ also has three other active players with 30 points or more. Lauren Pigott (44 goals, 7 assists), Kendal Borup (26 goals, 8 assists), and Erin Waller (19 goals, 14 assists) are other top scorers. Alex Spark had 44 goals and 10 assists in the first 10 games of the season, but is out with an injury.

Pigott leads the Lions in draw controls (63), ground balls (34), and is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (13). Nealon is second in draw controls with 51.

The Mules also hosted the previous five opening round games and won those contests by a goal margin of 94-22. Lasell is playing in the NCAA tourney for the first time in program history. Webcast and live statistics for the game can be viewed at http://livestats.prestosports.com/colby/

If the seventh-ranked Mules win Wednesday, the team is likely heading back to Trinity College for another weekend. Colby just played in the NESCAC playoffs on Saturday at Trinity. The Bantams just need to win their opening round game Wednesday and will host a regional Saturday and Sunday.

Colby junior Katharine Eddy went over 50 points on the season after scoring twice and dishing three assists in a tough 11-10 NESCAC semifinal loss to Middlebury on Saturday. She ranks first in the conference in assists per game (2.00) and third in points per game with 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points.

Lindsey McKenna is third in the conference in goals per game (2.69) and eighth in points per game with 43 goals and four assists for 47 points. Kate Pistel, an All-American last year with McKenna, has 22 goals and 10 assists.

Colby All-American defender Kirsten Karis leads the Mules in ground balls (23), ranks second in caused turnovers (18), and has 13 draw controls.

Junior goalie Michelle Burt is third in the NESCAC in save percentage (.540) and fifth in goals against average (7.49). Claire Dickson also has played quality minutes this year and has a .569 save percentage and a 6.36 goals against average.

Lasell is 15-3 overall and won the championship in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with a 15-14 victory over Simmons College. The Lasers and the Mules have no common opponents this year. Lasell's three losses came to Wellesley (14-7), MIT (15-8), and Western New England (20-19, 2 OT).

Britney Wuorio has 83 goals and 46 assists for 129 points, Ashley Slattery is at 62 goals and 53 assists for 115 points, and Caitlyn Brecher has 40 goals and 11 assists. Rebecca Stanton leads Lasell in draw controls (63), while Slattery has team-bests of 57 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers.

Trinity would host the first game Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The seventh-ranked Mules come into the NCAA tourney playing well. The Panthers will play host to Castleton State, while Bowdoin will entertain Bridgewater State. There are 32 teams in the tournament and 11 squads were given at-large bids.

A week after finishing a strong third at the NESCAC Championships, the Colby women did even better this Saturday by finishing third overall in a field of 25 scoring teams. The Mules had 78 points and finished behind only champion MIT (126.50) and Tufts University (93).

The 1,600 relay team clocked a 3:51.75, with Tolman coming up big on the third leg. She started out behind Rhode Island College's Natasha Miller on the hand-off, was able to pass her on the second turn, and gave anchor leg Brittney Bell a sizable lead. Bell ran a strong final leg to help the Mules beat runner-up Williams by more than two seconds.

Colby's 400 relay team of Bell, Tolman, Emily Doyle, and Frances Onyilagha took second place in 48.08. Bell and Alanna McDonough both broke a 27-year-old Colby school record in the 400 hurdles. McDonough, running in an earlier heat, had a time of 1:03.92 to break the record of Heather Frazier (1986) to finish fifth overall. Just minutes later, Bell broke McDonough's record with a 1:03.15 clocking to take fourth place.

Emily Doyle broke Bell's school record of last year in the 400 meters with a time of 56.45. Tolman finished in fourth place in 57.63.

Tufts received wins from Kelly Allen in the discus (162-06), Marilyn Allen in the 100 hurdles (14.90), and the 400 relay team (48.01) of Christina Harvey, Samantha Bissonnette, Anya Kaufmann, and Alexis Harrison.

The Mules, seeded fourth in the tourney, fall to 12-4 overall. Colby is likely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament when the pairings are announced Sunday at 9:30 p.m. Middlebury moves to 15-1 overall and will take on Trinity in the NESCAC title game Sunday at noon.

Colby stunningly fell behind 12-0 early in the second half of a home game against Middlebury two weeks ago. The Mules made sure that would not happen again by taking a 6-1 lead at one point in the first half and settled for an 8-5 margin at intermission. Colby pushed the lead to 10-6 with 22:43 to play, but the Panthers did not allow a goal the rest of the way and had a five-goal run to pull out the win.

The Mules fell behind 6-0 in the opening seven minutes of the home game against Middlebury, but Colby came out ready to play Saturday. Katharine Eddy scored unassisted just 45 seconds into the game for an important confidence score.

Colby tallied three times in a span of about three minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Tess Petesch made it 2-0 off an assist from Eddy, first-year Abby Hooper tallied from Abby Hatch, and Lindsey McKenna scored the first of her three goals with 20:51 to play.

After a Middlebury goal by Emma Kramer with 19:45 remaining, Eddy scored on another unassisted goal with 18:20 left and Kate Pistel buried a free-position shot just 18 seconds later for a 6-1 margin.

Middlebury chipped away at the lead on three straight goals to make it 6-4 with 8:50 to play to halftime. Margaret Souther had back-to-back scores and NESCAC leading scorer Ellen Halle had the third goal.

Colby answered with two goals, the first from McKenna off a pass from Petesch with 5:30 to play and from Hilary Barr on the second of three assists from Eddy with 42 seconds left. Souther, though, tallied for the third time in the half with just five seconds to play for a momentum changer for the Panthers.

Bob Cook pitched a complete game in the opener and Dylan Driscoll earned the victory in the nightcap to help the Lord Jeffs.

Amherst moves to 22-11 overall, while the Mules end the season at 11-23.

Cook struck out five, walked none, and gave up just the lone earned run in improving to 4-2 this year. Driscoll moved to 7-0 after pitching five innings and striking out three.

The Lord Jeffs scored a lone run in the first inning of the opener when Jonathan Ramirez singled, stole second base, and eventually scored when Alex Hero reached on an error.

Amherst led off the second with another single, this time by catcher Dave Cunningham. After moving to second on a groundout, Cunningham scored on a single by Andrew Vandini.

The Mules kept it close for five innings, with senior pitcher Mark Nelson keeping his team in the game. Colby cut the lead to 2-1 in the second when Daniel Csaplar had a one-out single, moved to second on a single by Christopher Sonberg, and scored on John Schroeder's single in the bottom of the second.

The Lord Jeffs took control with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Hero singled to lead off and promptly stole second base. He later scored on a single by Mike Odenwaelder. Cunningham had a single to bring in another run and Vandini smacked an RBI double to score Cunningham.

In the second game, Ramirez again led off with a single and stole second base in the first inning. Taiki Kasuga moved Ramirez over to third with a single and Cook followed with an RBI groundout to second base. Odenwaelder had a double to plate Kasuga for a 2-0 lead.

Colby had a lone run in the third when Schroeder was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Tyler Starks singled him to second base and he later scored on a single by Nathan Ellis.

Amherst added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 4-1 margin. Conner Gunn singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by Cunningham. Vandini put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and Ramirez had a double to score both runs.

The Mules made it 4-2 with another lone run in the fourth inning. Kevin Galvin led off with a single, moved to second on a single by Csaplar, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Ben Crocker. Schroeder reached on a fielder's choice and brought in Galvin with Colby's second run.

Amherst went ahead 7-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Hero singled to start things off, Cook was hit by a pitch, and Odenwaelder singled to load the bases. Hero and Cook both came around to score on a wild pitch, and Gunn had an RBI single for the other score.

Ellis reached by a fielder's choice in the sixth inning for Colby and later scored on a single by Galvin. Amherst scored its final run in the sixth inning when Hero had a two-out single, stole second base, and scored on Cook's single.

Starks, Kramer, and Galvin all had two hits for Colby in the second game.

The Mules (12-3 overall) will play third-ranked Middlebury College in the second semifinal game at 2:30 p.m. The game will be Webcast at http://www.trincoll.edu/livevideo/Pages/default.aspx. Trinity College, the defending national champions and top-ranked in the country this year, takes on Hamilton College in the other semifinal at noon. The championship game will be Sunday at noon at Trinity.

Colby lost a stunning 14-6 game at home to Middlebury a few weeks ago in a contest where the Mules fell behind 12-0 early in the second half. Colby also fell 8-4 at home to Trinity back on April 7 in a game that was tied 4-4 early in the second half. The Mules own a 13-9 victory over Hamilton in a game played in Florida.

The Mules had their streak of five straight NESCAC title game appearances broken last year, but Colby still made the NCAA Division III Tournament and reached the quarterfinal round for the third straight season.

Colby and Middlebury may have the greatest rivalry in NESCAC women's lacrosse playoff history. The two teams will meet for the record eighth time in championship play, with the Panthers winning the first seven NESCAC tittles from 2001 to 2007. Colby won the next two championships in 2008 and 2009, Williams was the winner in 2010, and Trinity has won the title the past two years.

The Mules, 6-1 in away and neutral site games this year, are led in scoring by junior Katharine Eddy (19 goals, 27 assists, 46 points). She ranks second in the league in assists and fifth in scoring. Eddy also is first for the Mules in free-position goals (8-for-13) and is second in draw controls (25).

All-American Lindsey McKenna was the NESCAC Player of the Week for last week after scoring nine goals and dishing an assist in a win against Bates College and a quarterfinal round victory over Amherst College. McKenna reached 40-plus goals for the third consecutive year and has 40 goals and four assists this year. She also leads Colby in draw controls (29) and is second in free-position goals (7-for-13).

All-American midfielder Kate Pistel is third in scoring with 21 goals and nine assists for 30 points. Dana Swaffield (16 goals, 9 assists), Katie Griffin (16 goals, 5 assists), Alex Mintz (12 goals, 7 assists), and Tess Petesch (12 goals, 6 assists) are other scoring leaders. Sarah Lux is second to Eddy in assists with 11.

Colby goalie Michelle Burt held Amherst to just three goals in the quarterfinal round game last Saturday. She ranks second in the NESCAC in save percentage (.548). Claire Dickson also has played well in net for the Mules.

All-American defender Kirsten Karis leads the Mules in ground balls (23) and is second in caused turnovers (18). Meg Mooney is first in caused turnovers (19), while fellow defenders Lisa Hoopes (15 CT, 18 GB) and Brittany Chin (12 CT, 14 GB) also are above 10 caused turnovers on the season.

Middlebury (14-1 overall), the second seed, has scored 46 goals in the last three games against NESCAC opponents and has just the lone 10-9 setback at Trinity on April 13. Ellen Halle leads the NESCAC in points (76), goals (47), and assists (29). She was dangerous against the Mules in the last meeting by passing and driving from behind the net.

The Panthers have other offensive weapons in Margaret Souther (31 goals, 18 assists), Emma Kramer (28 goals, 10 assists), and Lisa Herzog (25 goals, 7 assists.

Trinity will take a 23-game winning streak into its semifinal game with Hamilton. The Bantams are 15-0 overall and are led by Kaitlin Hildebrand (30 goals, 16 assists), Megan Leonhard (31 goals, 4 assists), and Hadley Duncan (29 goals, 6 assists). Leonhard has team-bests of 47 draw controls and 26 caused turnovers.

Hamilton (9-7 overall) has lost to all three of the other semifinal teams, but came up with a big in a 10-9 road win at Bowdoin College last Saturday in a quarterfinal game.

Katie D'Antonio (34 goals, 13 assists) and Rachel Friedman (29 goals, 17 assists) are the two main scorers for the Continentals. Friedman also leads the team in draw controls (33).

Hanson, Ellis have big days for baseball in tight 5-4 loss

LEWISTON, Maine --- First-year pitcher Soren Hanson struck out 11 batters in 7.1 innings of work and Nathan Ellis had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Colby College baseball team, but Bates College scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull out a 5-4 non-conference win Friday.

Colby (11-21 overall) will finish the season Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Amherst College.

Hanson, who took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, had six straight strikeouts at one point from the last out of the second to the second out of the fourth inning. The strikeout streak was broke when the Mules committed an error, but Hanson followed with another strikeout to end the inning.

Bates scored twice in the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Sam Berry doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a groundout by Nate Pajka. Alex Parker smacked a double to bring in Berry with the tying run and Colby brought in Dakota Rabbitt in relief of Hanson. Berto Diaz greeted Rabbitt with a single to score Parker.

Colby sent the game into extra innings with a lone run in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Daniel Csaplar had a pinch-hit single and Nils Carlson followed with another pinch-hit single. After getting a strikeout for the second out, Bates pitcher Dean Bonneau was unable to put the game away. Ellis singled up the middle to bring in Csaplar with the tying run.

Parker led off the 10th inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. After a strikeout, Parker moved to third on a passed ball. Jeff Gunn followed with a single to right field to bring in Parker with the game-winning run.

John Schroeder had a hit and scored a run for the Mules. Luke Duncklee and Jake Kramer had the other hits, while Tyler Starks and Kevin Galvin both had runs.

After Bates scored a lone run in the bottom of the first inning, Colby struck back for three unearned runs in the top of the second. With one out, Galvin reached on an error and Bates managed to get the second out after the miscue. Instead of being out of the inning, Schroeder had a bunt single to move Galvin to second and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Starks reached on an error that brought in Galvin and Duncklee reached on the third error of the inning to bring home Schroeder. Ellis followed with an RBI single to plate Starks.

Bates cut the Colby lead to 3-2 with a lone run in the fifth inning. Conor Reenstierna singled to lead off the inning and later scored with two outs on a double by Kevin Davis.

Colby teammate John Jennings (St. John's Prep/Danvers, Mass.) was selected to the All-NESCAC second team at attacker.

Deveau, who also was named to the All-NESCAC First Team, earned all-conference honors the past three years. He was on the first team as a junior and second team as a sophomore. Deveau was named the league's top rookie after the 2010 season.

"Ian is a young man who embodies what playing college lacrosse is all about," Colby head coach Justin Domingos said. "His passion for the game, his love for his teammates, and his scoring ability put him in a position to win this award. I, along with everyone in the Colby lacrosse family, could not be happier for Ian."

Deveau is the seventh Colby athlete since the NESCAC started a playoff system in 2001 to earn Player of the Year honors. Women's lacrosse player Kate Sheridan '09 is the lone Colby athlete to earn two NESCAC Player of the Year honors (2008, 2009). Men's basketball player Sam Clark '01 (2001), women's basketball player Sarah Walsh '03 (2003), volleyball player Cait Cleaver '06 (2005), men's hockey player Greg Osborne '07 (2007), and men's hockey player T.J. Kelley '08 (2008) also have been honored.

Deveau finished his career ranked fifth in scoring at Colby with 99 goals and 80 assists for 179 career points. He is sixth in goals, sixth in assists, and tied for sixth for most points in a season (52 in 2013). Deveau ranks first in the conference in points per game (3.71) on 36 goals and 16 assists for 52 points, second in man-up goals (8), third in goals per game (2.57), and tied for ninth in assists per contest (1.14). In conference only statistics, Deveau (23 goals, 10 assists) was second to teammate Greg McKillop in scoring and is tied for second in man-up goals (4).

Jennings missed five games due to injury and still managed to finish third on Colby in scoring with 27 goals and five assist for 32 points. He finished his career ranked third all-time in goals scored for Colby with 115 and added 14 assists for 129 points. Jennings put up those totals despite missing 13 games during his first and senior seasons.

Jennings was the NESCAC Player of the Week after scoring five goals in an 11-10 overtime win over Amherst College to start the season. He also had four goals and one assist in a big 8-6 win against Maine rival Bowdoin College.

Bell, a senior, and first-years Emily Doyle and Emily Tolman were honored in both the 400 and 1,600 relays. Brittany Reardon was part of the 400 relay team and Frances Onyilagha was on the 1,600 squad.

Bell made All-NESCAC in the 400-meter dash in her first year and was part of 400 relay teams in her sophomore and junior seasons.

The highlight of a great meet for Colby was Doyle, Onyilagha, Bell, and Tolman setting a NESCAC and school record with a winning time of 3:51.97 in the 1,600 relay. The 400 relay finished in second place in 48.39.

Onyilagha, Reardon, and Fryxell all made the team for the third straight year. Onyilagha won the 200 dash (25.08) and took third in the 100 (12.48). Reardon placed second in the 100 hurdles (14.86) and just missed another honor after taking fourth in the pole vault (10-6). Fryxell took second place in the javelin throw (122-06).

Colby (11-20 overall) will play at Bates College at 4 p.m. Friday in a newly scheduled game. The Mules then close out the season Saturday at 1 p.m. (new time start) in a doubleheader against Amherst College at Coombs Field.

Maine-Farmington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out single by Brian Jenkins and an RBI double by Colin Mello.

The game stayed that way until the Mules finally scored on UMF starter Casey Ashey, who struck out five and walked none in a complete game. Tim Corey led off the sixth inning with a home run and Alec Finigan followed with a double. Nathan Ellis was able put down a sacrifice bunt to move Finigan over to third base and Tyler Starks followed with a big single to drive in the game-winning run.

Corey finished the day with two hits, one run, and one RBI. Finigan also had a pair of hits and scored the one run.

Parsons threw 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs while striking out three and walking no one. Csaplar, who has not given up a run this year in four relief appearances, pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Colin Cummings smacked a grand slam home run in the first inning, driving in Jake Kramer, Finigan, and Nils Carlson. Kramer was hit by a pitch for the team-leading seventh time this year, Finigan walked, and Carlson had a single to load the bases.

After UMF scored three runs (just one earned) in the bottom of the first, neither team scored over the next three innings. The Mules went ahead 9-3 with five runs in the fifth inning. Kramer, Corey, and Finigan all singled to load the bases with no outs. Carlson came up big with a two-run single and Cummings added his fifth RBI of the day by driving in Finigan with a single. Starks added a two-run double to bring in Carlson and Cummings.

The Beavers bounced back again in the bottom of the inning with three runs to cut the margin to 9-6. Matthew Woodbury had an RBI double and Zach Keene and Ben Keene both had RBI singles.

The Mules added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Thomas Forese led off with a single. After back-to-back walks to Jon Garcia and John Schroeder loaded the bases, Starks had his third RBI of the day with a single.

Cummings added two runs and two hits to go with his five RBI, while Starks had three hits and drove in three. Carlson finished with a pair of hits, two runs, and two RBI.

The Panthers improved to 19-18 overall, while the Mules fell to 9-20.

Runnals struck out four, walked none, and allowed seven hits in the first game. Regan gave up both of the runs in the second game while striking out five and walking none. Ryan Wakefield (Sanbornton, N.H.) worked the seventh inning for the save.

Plymouth State scored three runs in the first inning of the opener to take early control. Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to start the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After the second out of the inning, Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) walked, Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I.) had a single to drive in Beard, Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) doubled to bring in Madonna, and Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) singled to score Hall. Beard had two doubles and two runs in the opener.

In the second, the Panthers scored two unearned runs when Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, N.H.) reached by error to start the inning. Beard followed with a double to put Cosgrove over to third base. After a strikeout, Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, N.H.) singled to bring in Cosgrove and Cox had a sacrifice fly to score Beard.

In the top of the third, Thompson tripled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Cosgrove for a 6-0 margin.

Colby scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Starks (Milton, Mass.) led off with a single and later scored on the fifth triple of the season by Jason Buco (Methuen, Mass.). Colin Cummings (Ashburn, Va.) had an RBI groundout to bring in Buco.

Cosgrove, Madonna, and Thompson all had two hits, one run, and one RBI for the winners. Starks and Alec Finigan (Milton, Mass.) both had two hits for Colby.

In the second game, the Panthers had a lone run in the first inning when a hit batter, a single, and a walk loaded the bases. Hall followed with a single to bring in McIntosh, but Colby was able to get out of the inning with no more damage.

Hall, who was 3-for-3 in the second game, had a two-out double in the third inning and Thompson followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 margin.

Plymouth State scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth after Madonna reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hall. Thompson, who had three hits and two RBI in the game, smacked a double to plate Madonna.

The third run was big because Colby scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nathan Ellis (Milton, Mass.) singled to lead the inning off, moved to second when Daniel Csaplar (Winchester, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. Christopher Sonberg (Windsor, Conn.) had a two-run pinch-hit single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Burt, a junior, may have played the best game of her career after stopping six shots in each half. She had a number of difficult stops in the second half. Burt also finished with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Katharine Eddy (Cheshire, Conn.) scored on a blast from the right side of the goal with 23:06 left to put the Mules up 1-0. Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.) took a feed from Sarah Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) and scored on a low shot with 21:12 to play for a 2-0 Mule lead.

Amherst cut the lead in half with 15:31 to go on Caroline Holliday's (Newark, Del.) catch-and-shoot off a nice pass from Elizabeth Ludlow (Huntington, N.Y.). Petesch scored her second goal of the game from Eddy with 11:54 to play for the 3-1 margin.

Colby, which went 0-for-2 on free-position shots in the first half, made four of its five free-position shots in the final 30 minutes. The Mules scored four straight goals in the first 7:17 of the second half to take command. Eddy scored her second goal of the contest on a free-position shot just 1:43 into the half. After an unassisted goal by Abby Hatch with 25:21 remaining, McKenna scored back-to-back free-position goals with 23:49 and 22:43 to play.

The Mules, ranked eighth nationally, once again scored four straight goals to pull away for an 11-2 lead. Hatch had her second goal with 17:29 left from Eddy, McKenna scored on her third free-position shot, McKenna got her fourth of the game from Hatch, and Alex Mintz (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) took a feed from Dana Swaffield (Dover, Mass.) for the Mules' final score.

The Jeffs closed out the scoring when Hillary Densen (Summit, N.J.) converted on a free-position goal with 3:46 to play.

While Tufts easily won the 11-team meet with 203 points, Colby was just eight points behind runner-up Middlebury College (117.5) with 109.5 points and just edged fourth place Williams College (109). The Mules won the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title over fifth place Bowdoin College (82) and seventh place Bates College (58).

Colby tied its best finish ever at the NESCAC Championships since the league started playoff formats in sports in 2001. The Mules took third in 2002 and also had 109.5 points 10 years ago in 2003 while taking third place.

Colby's flying 1,600 relay team won the NESCAC title in 3:51.97 to top second place Williams (3:52.77) by nearly one second. Third place Middlebury was more than six seconds behind the Mules. Doyle ran the first 400 meters and handed off to Onyilagha, Tolman went third, and Bell ran the anchor leg.

Colby senior Lauren Becker allowed just one earned run in a fine pitching effort in the opening game.

Tufts pitchers Rebecca DiBiase and Aly Moskowitz earned the shutouts for the Jumbos (35-3 overall, 12-0 NESCAC East).

DiBiase controlled the first game for Tufts, scattering four hits over seven innings. The Jumbos gave DiBiase all the runs she would need in the fourth inning when Emily Beinecke singled to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following two fly outs, sophomore Gracie Marshall doubled to right to bring in Beinecke.

The Jumbos got on the board again in the sixth with an unearned run as Beinecke again singled to left and was sacrificed to second by Kris Parr. Marshall drove a line drive to left field that was bobbled and dropped, allowing Beinecke to score.

Meaghan Lewia had two of Colby's four hits.

In the second game, Tufts scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Michelle Cooprider singled to center and Jo Clair doubled to right-center to score Cooprider. Beinecke followed that with a home run to left to give the Jumbos a 3-0 lead.

Colby threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases on a single by Brianne Wheeler and consecutive two-out singles by Tori Sansone and Lindsay Peterson. Sophomore Carolyn Bennett grounded to Moskowitz to end the inning.

Tufts loaded the bases in the third, but failed to score. The Jumbos then broke open the game in the fourth inning, scoring four unearned runs.
