WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Nick Kmetz (Laurel, Del.) had the best quarterback performance of anybody in NCAA Division III last Saturday after being named to the D3Football.com National Team of the Week on Wednesday.
Kmetz was the lone quarterback selected to the team after setting a program record with 473 yards of total offense against Tufts University. He was honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week on Monday.
Kmetz had 392 yards of passing on 40-of-53 passing and added 17 rushes for 81 yards (4.8 per rush). Besides the total offense record, Kmetz also set Colby marks for completions in a game (40) and passes attempted (53).
Kmetz came up big in the clutch after Tufts took a 41-28 lead with nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter. He had a part in every yard with 57 yards passing and 13 yards rushing on an 11-play, 70-yard drive that Kmetz finished with a 16-yard scoring pass to Nat Carson to cut the lead to 41-35.
The next drive was even better for the junior quarterback. Taking over with 3:24 to play, Kmetz converted two fourth down situations on a pass and the other on a 1-yard plunge. Colby drove 73 yards on 17 plays and pulled out the win when Kmetz hit Spencer Merwin on a 1-yard touchdown pass with no time remaining.
Kmetz, who also went over 3,000 career passing yards in the game, ranks third in the NESCAC in passing efficiency (122.8), fifth in total offense (244.6), and fifth in passing yards per game (229.0). He has thrown for 1,603 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Colby (4-3), winners of three straight games, closes out the season this Saturday at home against Bowdoin College at 12:30 p.m.
