BURLINGTON, Vt. --- Colby College was well represented at the Vermont City Marathon on Sunday, with Dan Vassallo '07, Mike Bienkowski '10, and Patrick Fournier '98 taking half of the top six spots in the race.

Vassallo (Wilmington, Mass.), who won the Philadelphia Marathon in November, was a champion again after taking first place in Vermont with a time of 2:24:09. He beat runner-up Michael Dixon by nearly four minutes. Vassallo's personal record was a 2:21:28 in Philadelphia, but the high humidity and a light rain made the pace a little slower Sunday.

Bienkowski (Lexington, Mass.) was running his first marathon and was not seeded, but may have made the biggest impact of the day by finishing fourth in a time of 2:32.27.

Fournier, who took sixth place in 2:34:53, held the 10-kilometer record at Colby before Vassallo broke his mark. He took a 10-year hiatus from competitive running before coming back to the sport three years ago. Fournier was the top Maine finisher at the Boston Marathon in 2010.

Katrina Gravel '10 (Peabody, Mass.) finished 10th among women and placed 63rd overall with a clocking of 3:01:17 in her marathon debut.

Other Colby graduates who competed Sunday included: Tim Maguire (Newton, Mass) with a 2:54.42 for 39th place, John Waller (Somerville, Mass.) at 2:58.00 for 51st place, Tim Worthington (Philadelphia, Pa.) in 119th place in 3:12:19, and Bob Glotfelty (Portsmouth, N.H.) in 185th place with a 3:19:30.

The event also had relay marathons and two Colby teams competed. Current Colby runners Chris Halladay, Will Supple, Luke Doherty Munro, Justin Rouse, and Matt White placed fifth with a time of 2:38.10. The Colby graduate team of Ben Ossoff, Chris DeRoo, Kirsten Davis, Abbie Frederick, and Andy Maguire were 13th in 2:55.57.
