Men's basketball falls in league opener

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- In a game featuring two of the best players in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, Bowdoin College and Will Hanley (New Canaan, Conn.) took a 74-61 victory over Colby College and Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) in the league opener for both teams Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Bowdoin won for the eighth straight time and improved to 11-2 overall. Colby had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to 8-7 overall.

Hanley and Russell each put on a show, both finishing with double-doubles in scoring and rebounding. Hanley finished with 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting, ripped 19 rebounds, and had eight assists. Meanwhile, Russell added 20 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots, and two steals.

Justin Nowell (Cos Cob, Conn.) was 6-for-9 from the field for 13 points and added four assists for the Polar Bears. Maximillian Staiger (Caldwell, N.J.) added 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting, Ryan O'Connell (Ipswich, Mass.) also had 12 points, and Randy DeFeo (Ridgewood, N.J.) had six points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Ben Foreman (Los Angeles, Calif.) nailed four 3-point shots on the way to 19 points for Colby. Gordon Fischer (Camden, Maine) added 10 points off the bench, Uzoma Orchingwa (West Hartford, Conn.) finished with six points and four rebounds, and Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine) had six points and five assists.

The Polar Bears took control early and had a 26-17 lead with 7:38 to play in the opening half. Colby cut the margin to 28-23 with 3:15 to play, but Bowdoin went on a 9-2 run to go up 37-25 at the break.

Bowdoin darted out to a 48-30 lead about four minutes into the second half. The Mules got as close as 60-48 with 6:02 left in the game and forced the Polar Bears to take a timeout. Bowdoin settled down and pulled away for a 69-52 margin.
