BRUNSWICK, Maine --- Gil Haylon was fouled on a 3-point shot with 14 seconds left and nailed all three free throws to break a 48-48 tie and help the Colby College men's basketball team open up New England Small College Athletic Conference play with a 53-51 win at Bowdoin College on Saturday. Colby improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Polar Bears drop to 8-4 and 0-1 in the conference. Bowdoin tied the game at 48-48 when Paul Sellew hit a jumper with 41 seconds remaining. After a Colby timeout, Haylon was fouled by Will Hanley. Sellew missed a 3-point shot with five seconds remaining and Colby's Justin Sherman hit two important free throws with four seconds to play. Hanley nailed a 3-point shot for Bowdoin's final points. The game had five tie scores and six lead changes as the Polar Bears led 29-26 at halftime. The Mules fell behind 37-33 with 13:21 to play, but Colby went on an 8-0 run to take a 41-37 lead. Bowdoin quickly got back in the game and the margin was tight from that point. Mike Russell had his seventh double-double of the season with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 10 rebounds for Colby. With leading scorer Adam Choice having an off day with nine points, the Mules were still able to win with their balance. Haylon finished with 12 points and was 3-for-7 from 3-point range, Sherman had eight points, Chas Woodward finished with six points and five rebounds, and Christian Van Loenen dished five assists to go with his four points. Hanley led Bowdin with 12 points and Ryan O'Connell had 11 points. Colby was 11-for-13 from the foul line and Bowdoin managed just a 4-for-7 effort.
