WATERVILLE, Maine -- St. Joseph’s College first-year guard Eric Friend (Portland, Maine) nailed a 60-foot shot at the buzzer to lift the Monks to a stunning 85-83 victory over Colby College in non-conference men’s basketball Thursday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

St. Joseph’s (3-4) battled back from a seven-point deficit with 1:21 left in the game to go ahead 82-80 on a 3-point shot by Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) with seven seconds left. Colby (7-3), though, went ahead 83-82 when Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) nailed three straight free throws with 0.9 seconds left after he was fouled on a 3-point shot.

After a timeout, Friend received the inbounds pass and without taking a dribble nailed the 60-foot shot at the buzzer to set off a wild celebration by the Monks.

The difference in the game came down to free throw shooting. St. Joseph’s shot 17-for-21 from the line, including an 11-for-12 effort in the second half. The Mules were 15-for-28 from the line for the game after going 2-for-2 in the first half.

Colby led 77-70 with 1:21 left, but the Monks battled back with a 3-point shot by Friend with 1:02 remaining to cut the margin to four. The Mules’ Artie Cutrone (Garden City, N.Y.) nailed two free throws to make it 79-73, however the Monks quickly scored again on a lay-up by Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, N.Y.) with 40 seconds left.

Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) made one of his two free throws for Colby with 38 seconds left for an 80-75 margin. The Monks cut the lead to three on a lay-up by Raymond Eatmon (Huntington, N.Y.) with 33 seconds left. After Colby missed two free throws, Murphy went 2-for-2 from the foul line with 19 seconds remaining to make it 80-79. The Mules again missed two free throws and then Rue hit his 3-point shot with seven seconds left for an 82-80 lead for the Monks.
