Men's basketball goes overtime to beat Bates

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) scored six of his game-high 27 points in overtime and Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine) went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the extra session as the Colby College men's basketball team took a 66-61 win over Bates College on Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Mules improve to 9-2 overall, while Bates falls to 6-5. The game did not count in the New England Small College Athletic Conference standings. The teams will meet later in the season at Bates in the league contest.

Choice was 10-for-11 from the foul line and added six rebounds, three blocked shots, and a pair of assists. Van Loenen was 5-for-5 from the foul line on the way to nine points and three assists. Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) had his seventh double-double in scoring and rebounding in 11 games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Sherman (Piedmont, Calif.) had six points and six rebounds for the winners.

Colby held a 52-49 lead after Choice nailed two free throws with 2:26 to play, but Bates scored the final three points of regulation and kept the Mules scoreless to send the game to overtime. Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) hit two free throws with 1:22 to play and Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) was 1-for-2 from the foul line with 32 seconds left for the Bobcats' final three points of regulation.

After the teams traded baskets to start the overtime, Colby used a 4-0 run on two straight buckets by Choice to take the lead for good. Bates got as close as 60-58 when John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) hit a jumper with 37 seconds left, but Colby went 6-for-8 from the foul line after that to pull out the win. Colby was 3-for-4 from the field and 8-for-11 from the foul line in the extra session.

Bates did not have a player in double figures, but did have balanced scoring to stay in the game. Nick Schmiemann (Weymouth, Mass.), Marshall Hatch (Chicago, Ill.), Squires, and Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) all had nine points. Sean Wirth (Barrington, R.I.) added eight points, while Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) finished with six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
