WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College men's basketball player Drew Cohen (Hackley School/Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) is already drawing attention before the season starts after being named to the DIII News Preseason All-American Team.
Cohen was one of 24 players selected to the team and was picked as one of three players from the Northeast Region.
The top shot blocker in NCAA Division III last year, Cohen was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned conference first team honors. He also was named to the D3hoops.com Northeast All-Region second team and was on the first team for the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches Association honors.
Cohen led Division III in blocked shots per game (4.83) and total blocks (111). There were only five players with more than 100 blocks and only one of the other four averaged more than four blocked shots per game.
Besides leading the NESCAC in blocks, Cohen also ranked first in the league in rebounding (10.7) and second in scoring (19.7). His rebounding total put him tied for 11th nationally.
Cohen earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors twice during the regular season last year. He shot 48 percent from the field and was a solid 70 percent (141-for-201) from the foul line despite shooting more than 200 free throws.
Cohen heads into his final season at Colby poised to become the 32nd Colby player in team history to go over 1,000 career points. He has 840 points, 463 rebounds and 203 blocked shots in his career despite missing eight games over his first three years.
Salem State's Eric Downie and University of Massachusetts at Boston's Tony Barros were the other two players selected from the Northeast Region.
Colby opens the season against the host school at Babson College's Irving Invitational at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 17.
