Choice leads men's basketball to opener win

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Sophomore forward Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) had a collegiate-high 28 points and added 10 rebounds to help the Colby College men's basketball team to a 95-70 season-opening win over University of Maine at Fort Kent on Saturday at Thomas College.

Choice had 18 points in the first half and only played 24 minutes as the Mules (1-0) opened up a big lead in the second half. Choice, who had 25 points in a game against Trinity College last year for his previous high, shot 11-for-19 from the field and also blocked three shots.

Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) was 6-for-6 from the foul line and had 14 points and five rebounds in his collegiate debut for Colby. Mac Simpson (Casco, Maine) added 11 points and four assists, while Artie Cutrone (Garden City, N.Y.) had 11 points and six steals. Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) had nine points and Preston Decker (Newton, Mass.) finished with seven points and six rebounds.

The Mules trailed in the opening 15 minutes, but Choice got going late in the half and helped Colby to a 46-38 margin at the break.

Colby had a 50-29 advantage in rebounding and forced 22 turnovers (the Mules had 10).

Jimmy Lopez (Fitchburg, Mass.) had 17 points to lead Maine-Fort Kent (2-3). Hamill Bassue (St. Kitts) added 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, while Gediminas Sumyla (Vilnius, Lithuania) had 13 points and six assists.
