WALTHAM, Mass. --- Eric Beaulieu scored a collegiate-high 22 points while missing just two shots and teammate Mike Russell moved closer to 1,000 career points with 17 as the Colby College men's basketball team opened up a big halftime lead on the way to an 88-74 win over Newbury College on Saturday in the consolation game of the Brandeis Classic.

Beaulieu shot 11-for-13 from the field in just 21 minutes of action. He helped the Mules shoot 64.8 percent from the field after shooting 61.5 percent in a tough 73-71 loss to Curry on Friday night.

Russell had a second straight impressive outing with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in earning all-tournament team honors.. He averaged 19.5 points while shooting nearly 71 percent from the field, 11.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in the two games. Russell has 957 career points and 650 rebounds in his Colby career.

Colby's Gordon Fischer finished with 11 points, Christian Van Loenen added nine points and five assists, Ben Foreman scored five points and dished four assists, and Alex Swanson was second on the team in rebounding with five.

The Mules have shot well from the floor and had a solid rebounding edge in the opening two games. Colby is shooting .634 (59-for-93) from the field and have a 73-47 rebounding edge (plus-13).

Colby (1-1 overall) scored the first 10 points of the game before Newbury (0-2) finally scored four minutes into the contest. Beaulieu had six points and Fischer had the other four during the run.

Newbury actually fought back to take a 19-18 lead with 8:17 left to halftime, but the Mules received one free throw from Nick Rimsa to tie the game and a bucket by Forrest Lovett to go ahead for good. Colby had a 26-9 run in the final 7:45 of the first half to take a 44-27 margin at the break.

The Mules never let Newbury get closer than 12 points in the second half. Peterson Bernard had 16 points and 11 rebounds in a losing cause.
