PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- Adam Choice's return to his home state was a successful one Saturday when he scored 24 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead the Colby College men's basketball team to a 75-62 season-opening win over Rhode Island College.

Choice, who is from Newport, also went up against his brother, Mason, for the second straight year and won again. Mason Choice also played well for RIC (2-1) with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting.

The Anchormen took a 31-19 lead at halftime only to see the Mules (1-0) storm out in the second half with 56 points. Choice had 20 points in the second half of last year's game in a 66-61 win at Colby. He bettered that total with 24 this time and finished with 11 rebounds. Choice shot 9-for-13 from the foul line and also had a team-best six assists.

Michael Russell, Colby's bruising power forward, also had a double-double in scoring and rebounding with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Gil Haylon was 4-for-7 from 3-point range in the second half for 12 points and Justin Sherman added 10 points and five rebounds. Chas Woodward and Eric Beaulieu both shot 3-for-4 from the field to finish with six points.

Colby went to work quickly in the second half to get back in the game. Choice had nine points in an 11-2 run to cut the RIC lead to 37-32 with 15:49 to play. A Sherman 3-point shot with 11:30 to play cut the margin to 44-43.

The Anchormen, though, pulled away slightly and led 49-44 with 9:46 to play and still led 50-46 with 8:10 left. Haylon got hot from long range and drilled three 3-point shots to give the Mules the lead. RIC tied the game at 57-57 with 4:33 to go, but Colby rattled off 11 straight points over the next 2:29 to put the game away. Russell and Choice both had four points and Haylon his fourth 3-point shot.
