Men's basketball at 4-0 after overtime win

FARMINGTON, Maine --- Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) poured in a collegiate-high 37 points, including the final six points of regulation, to lift the Colby College men's basketball team to a 113-109 overtime victory over Elms College in the opening day of the Colby Invitational on Saturday at University of Maine at Farmington.

Colby improves to 4-0 and will meet Maine-Farmington in the title game Sunday at 2 p.m. Elms fell to 4-1 and will take on Fisher College in the consolation game at noon Sunday. Due to court renovations at Colby, the tourney is being played at Maine-Farmington.

Gaudet, who just had a collegiate-high 29 points in a win over University of New England on Monday, shot 12-for-17 from the field and was 7-for-9 from 3-point range. He also contributed eight rebounds and was 6-for-7 from the foul line.

With Elms up 91-85, Gaudet nailed a 3-point shot with 1:17 left to cut the lead to 91-88. Gaudet got fouled shooting a 3-point shot with 33 seconds left and calmly nailed all three free throws to tie the game at 91-91.

The Mules scored the first eight points of overtime to go up 99-91, but Elms battled back and cut the lead to 99-97 on a score by Juan Alverio (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) with 2:27 remaining. The Mules, though, got a lay-up from first-year forward Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass) and then a 3-point shot from Gaudet with 1:34 left for a 104-97 lead.

Artie Curtone (Garden City, N.Y.) had 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting for the Mules. Mac Simpson (Casco, Maine) added 24 points, while Russell finished with a double-double at 16 points and 12 rebounds. Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.), Colby's leading scorer, was held to six points yet he managed eight assists and five rebounds.

Juan Galdon (Holyoke, Mass.) had 36 points and five assists to lead Elms. The Blazers also got 18 points from Alverio and 15 points and nine assists by Aswad Thomas (Hartford, Conn.).
