Men's basketball drops first game of season

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's basketball team battled back from a big halftime deficit, but Bowdoin College held on for a 75-72 win over the Mules in non-conference play Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Bowdoin, which shot 73 percent (22-for-30) from the field in the opening half in taking a 52-31 lead, improved to 7-2 with the win. Colby (6-1) lost for the first time this season and also fell in the debut of the new basketball court at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Kyle Jackson (Acton, Mass.) finished with 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting and added three assists for Bowdoin, which finished the game with 61 percent shooting from the field.

The Polar Bears darted off to the big halftime lead behind 13 points from Jackson and 10 by Hippert.

The Mules chipped away at the lead in the second half in a hurry and only trailed 60-53 with 11:47 left in the game. Bowdoin pulled away again to take a 70-57 margin with 6:23 to go, but Colby fought back again and got the lead down to one point. Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) hit 2-for-2 from the foul line to make it 73-70 with 2:27 left and then Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) scored on a lay-up with 1:50 remaining to cut the Bowdoin lead to 73-72.

Jackson scored the final points of the game with lay-up with 49 seconds remaining for the Polar Bears. The Mules missed three 3-point shots in the final 49 seconds in an attempt to tie the game.

Mac Simpson (Casco, Maine) had 19 points and four assists to lead Colby. Choice finished with 15 points, Artie Cutrone (Garden City, N.Y.) had 12 points, and Russell and Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine) each had 10 points.
