Men's basketball gives No. 2 Amherst a battle

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's basketball team gave second-ranked Amherst College all it could handle on the Lord Jeffs' home court before falling 72-66 in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night.

The Mules (10-9, 1-4 NESCAC) led 52-51 after Mark Gaudet nailed a 3-point shot with 8:50 to go in the game. However, Amherst (17-2, 5-0) went on an 8-2 after that to take the lead for good. Colby got as close as three points in the final five minutes, but Amherst was able to hold on.

Gaudet finished with 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field (5-for-7 from 3-point range). Adam Choice added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Artie Cutrone also had 15 points. Nick Planeta finished with five points and six rebounds for Colby.

Brian Baskauskas led Amherst with 18 points.
