Men's basketball loses, gets NESCAC third seed

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Despite another double-double by Colby College's Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.), Connecticut College stayed alive for a New England Small College Athletic Conference playoff spot as the Camels posted a 65-60 win over the Mules on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Conn College moved to 10-13 overall and 2-6 in the league heading into its final regular season game at Bowdoin College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Colby, which is now 11-2 at home this year, will be the third seed in the upcoming NESCAC playoffs and finishes the regular season with a home game against Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.) had 17 points, four steals, and three assists to lead the Camels. Dean Lampe (Hamilton, Mass.) added 15 points and eight rebounds, Rob Harrigan (Milford, Conn.) finished with 14 points and four 3-point shots, and Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 13 points, seven boards, and four assists despite playing in foul trouble and seeing only 18 minutes of action.

Russell had his 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Colby (17-5, 5-3 NESCAC). Russell reached 600 rebounds for his career in just his junior season.

Adam Choice (Newport, R.I.) moved into ninth place on Colby's all-time scoring list with 1,487 points after scoring 15 and pulling down eight boards. He passed Matt Gaudet, who had 1,481 points from 1992 to 1995. Gil Haylon (Wellesley, Mass.) added 11 points, Eric Beaulieu (Concord, Mass.) had seven points and six boards, and Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine) had six points and six assists.

With the score tied 57-57, Connecticut College went on a 6-0 run to take command with just 37 seconds left. Porter hit 1-for-2 from the foul line with 1:46 left, Lampe nailed a big 3-point shot with 1:03 remaining, and Porter added two more free throws with 37 seconds left for a 63-57 margin.
