Men's basketball falls in NESCAC semifinal

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Middlebury College will get a chance to defend its New England Small College Athletic Conference title and the Colby Collby College men's basketball team will wait for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament after the Panthers took a 65-48 win on Saturday in a league semifinal game at Williams College.

Middlebury, the second seed at 24-2 overall, will try to make it two NESCAC titles in a row when the Panthers take on top-seeded Williams College at noon in the title game. Colby falls to 19-6 overall and will wait until Monday to see if the squad will play in the NCAA tourney. The selection announcement will be at 10 a.m. via Web cast and the brackets will be posted at 10:30 a.m. at www.ncaa.com

The Panthers came into the game with the league's best defense and held the Mules to under 50 points for the first time all season. Christian Van Loenen led Colby with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Chas Woodward finished with eight points, Adam Choice had seven points and five blocked shots, and Mike Russell finished with six points and nine rebounds.

Choice, who will have played his final game at Colby if the Mules do not make the NCAA tourney, ranks eighth all-time in scoring at Colby with 1,534 points. He also has 654 rebounds, 185 assists, 134 steals, and 95 blocked shots.

Andrew Locke and Nolan Thompson each paced the Panthers with 13 points, Ryan Sharry had 10 points, Jake Wolfin finished with eight points and four assists, and Tim Edwards scored seven and had five assists.

Colby only trailed 23-22 with 4:02 left to halftime and the Panthers took a tight 29-25 margin into the break. Locke scored the first six points of the half as Middlebury used an 8-0 run to take control at 37-25. Colby could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
