WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's hockey team started the weekend in 10th and last place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, but two straight home wins has the Mules suddenly in sixth place in the league after Saturday's 4-1 victory over University of Southern Maine at Alfond Rink.
The Mules move to 4-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the league after Saturday's win and a victory over University of New England on Friday night. Southern Maine fell to 4-8-2 overall.
Colby was 2-for-5 on the power play and held the Huskies without a goal on six chances with the extra man. Tom McGinn (St. Albans, Vt.) scored at 3:44 of the first period on the power play from Scott Harff (Watertown, N.Y.) and Karl Burns (Mequon, Wis.). The Mules made it 2-0 after one period when Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) notched his first goal of the season at 8:06 from Chris Buonomo (Edison, N.J.) and Harff.
Burns scored the lone goal of the second period at 16:52 off passes from Mike Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Billy Crinnion (Long Island, N.Y.).
USM got back in the game just 2:55 into the final period when defensemen Jason Olson (Rutland, Vt.) scored from Matt MacDonald (Byfield, Mass.) and Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.).
The Mules received an insurance goal with 3:36 to play when defensemen Jesse Lehman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season on the power play from Doherty and Crinnion.
Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) earned his 33rd career win for the Mules with 28 stops. USM goalie Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) stopped 28 shots.
