MALDEN, Mass. --- Colby College senior forward Patrick Rutherford scored two goals to lead the Mules men's hockey team past Tufts with a 7-2 NESCAC victory Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum II. The Mules took full advantage of 10 Jumbo penalties, netting four power-play goals.
Colby jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Tufts could get on the board. Rutherford and Matt Strickland had goals on the power play in the first period.
Rutherford added his second goal of the game at 15:45 of the second period to start the Colby run. In the third, senior forward Greg Osborne scored with help from Rutherford. Osborne would finish the day with a goal and three assists. The Mules stretched their lead to 5-1 at 11:27 of the third as junior defenseman Ryan Chrenek scored on an assist from Osborne and Jeoffery Jarnot.
Tufts got a short-handed goal from junior Greg McCarthy at 16:04 of the third, but Colby added their third power play goal of the game seconds later at 16:22. Junior defenseman Arthur Fitch gave the Mules a 6-2 lead on a feed from fellow junior defenseman Joe Rothwell and Josh Reber added the seventh goal.
Colby senior goalie Ben Granjean played well between the pipes, stopping 13 of the 15 shots he faced.
