WATERVILLE, Maine --- After battling to a 1-1 tie for 50 minutes, the Colby College men's hockey team fell 4-1 to Salem State on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Salem State is 11-6-1 overall, while the Mules fall to 5-10-3.
Ryan Hatch (Medway, Mass.) stopped 31 shots for the winners, including 14 in both the first and third periods.
After a scoreless opening period, the two teams traded goals in the next 20 minutes. Ian Flanagan (New Hampton, N.H.) tallied just 1:31 into the period off assists from Chris MacInnis (Waltham, Mass.) and Zach Doyen (Ortonville, Mich.).
Colby got its lone goal of the game when Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass knocked in his ninth goal of the season with just one second left in the period. Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.) and Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta) had assists for the Mules.
The two teams battled for the first 10 minutes of the third period without a goal. Salem State then put the game away with three straight tallies in 1:49. Doyen got the game-winning goal at 10:09 off a pass from Flanagan, who then had another assist when Brett Noll (Sandwich, Mass.) scored just 30 seconds later. Alex Molnar (Nitra, Slovakia) closed out the scoring at 11:58 from Sam Cannata (Bozeman, Mont.)
