SALEM, Mass. --- The Colby College men's hockey team started January play where the team finished up a few weeks ago after taking a 5-3 victory over Salem State on Monday night in a non-conference game.
The Mules improve to 7-2 overall and have won seven straight games. Colby has not allowed more than three goals in any game during the current win streak and the Mules have given up just 13 goals during the seven games. Colby had not played since taking back-to-back wins over rival Bowdoin College on December 11 and 12.
Colby's win streak matches the seven in a row the 2005-06 squad had to start the season. Those two win streaks are the longest for the Mules over the past 11 years.
The Mules led 5-0 before Salem State (6-3-1) fought back with three straight goals over the final 14 minutes to make the score close. The Vikings had two power play goals during that stretch.
Michael Doherty scored his third goal of the season just 4:08 into the game off assists from Michael Belliveau and Billy Crinnion. The Mules made it 2-0 at 9:13 of the first period when Matt Rappaport scored his first goal of the season off passes from Jared Crittenden and Mike Policinski.
Chris Buonomo also scored for the first time this season with just 1:33 left in the second period to give the Mules a 3-0 lead heading into the final period. Wil Hartigan had his sixth assist of the season on the play.
Hartigan scored his sixth goal of the year and his 15th as a Mule off a pass from Dan Nelson at 2:36 of the third period. The Mules went up 5-0 just 2:10 later when Michael Smigelski netted his third goal of the season from Nick Kondiles and Cory McGrath in an all first-year combination.
The Vikings finally scored with 14 minutes left when Casey Terreri tallied. Matt Kenline and Chris MacInnis also scored for Salem State.
Cody McKinney stopped 25 shots in 57 minutes of work and allowed just one goal. He lowered his goals against average to 1.90 this season and raised his save percentage to .937. Jared Tepper played three minutes in goal for the Mules.
The Mules put their winning streak on the line this weekend with a Friday home game at 7 p.m. against Saint Michael's College and then a 3 p.m. battle with third-ranked Norwich University on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
