WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's hockey team was just seconds away from pulling off an upset of third-ranked Norwich University, but the Cadets scored with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation and the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Colby improves to 7-2-2 overall and has a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2), while Norwich stayed unbeaten at 10-0-3.
Colby first-year player Michael Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored his fourth goal of the season just 28 seconds into the third period off assists from captain Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta) and assistant captain Jeoff Jarnot (Concord, N.H.).
Meanwhile, Colby goalie Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) nearly kept Norwich off the scoreboard. He had 34 saves, including 13 in the opening period.
Norwich finally broke the shutout when first-year Pier-Oliver Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored unassisted with just 14 seconds left in regulation. The Cadets had pulled goalie Ryan Klingensmith (Morton, Pa.) for the extra attacker with 47 seconds to play.
