BOSTON, Mass. --- Senior captain Ryan Chrenek scored a short-handed goal with just 10 seconds left in the second period and that proved to be the game-winning goal as the Colby College men's hockey team opened the season with a 4-3 win over University of Massachusetts at Boston on Friday night.
UMB (0-1) opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 8:53 of the opening period. Colby (1-0) did make it 2-1 after the first period when Mike Butler scored off assists from Eric Simmons and Matt Strickland. The Mules got three goals in the second period to go ahead for good. T.J. Kelley tallied at 2:06 off a pass from Wil Hartigan, who notched his first collegiate point for Colby. The Mules went up 3-2 when Joe Rothwell tallied on the power play at 14:32 off passes from Arthur Fritch and Kelley. UMB scored with 1:25 left in the game to cut Colby's lead to one. Cody McKinney stopped 16 shots for Colby in his collegiate debut in goal.
