WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team scored four power play goals and fought back from one-goal deficits on two occasions in taking a 6-3 season-opening win over Babson College at Alfond Rink on Friday night.
Colby defensemen Joe Rothwell (Unionville, Ontario) had two power play goals and added an assist. Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) and Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) both had three assists, while Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prairie, Alberta) had a pair of goals.
Babson (0-1) and the Mules were tied 1-1 after one period. The Beavers scored first at 11:01 on a goal by Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass.). Colby answered three minutes later when T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied.
Babson went ahead again at 2:33 of the second period on a goal by Brad Baldelli (Northboro, Mass.), but the Mules took control after that goal. Rothwell got his first power play goal at 6:31 and then Chrenek put Colby ahead for good with his first goal at 18:20 for a 3-2 lead after two periods.
Colby first-year player Eric Simmons (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) got his first collegiate goal at 2:21 of the third period for a 4-2 lead. Rothwell added his second goal at 14:23 and Chrenek tallied with just 16 seconds left in the game.
The Beavers scored 10 seconds after Chrenek's goal when Schneider got his second goal.
Colby first-year players Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta), Mike White (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Mike Policinski (Shorewood, Minn.) all had one assist for the first collegiate points.
The Mules return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. against University of Massachusetts-Boston at Alfond Rink.
