WATERVILLE, Maine --- Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) had three goals and one assist as the Colby College men's hockey team had four goals in the second period to pull away for an 8-2 victory over University of Massachusetts at Boston on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Fritch, a junior defensemen, had three goals and four assists in Colby's weekend that also featured a 6-3 win over Babson College. Fritch got the eventual game-winning goal at 9:54 of the second period to break a 2-2 tie.
Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) added one goal and three assists to move his season totals to one goal and six assists in the opening two games.
Patrick Rutherford (Truro, Nova Scotia) tallied at 3:58 of the first period and Mike Policinski (Shorewood, Minn.) got his first collegiate goal at 8:29 to give the Mules a 2-0 lead.
UMass-Boston (0-2) fought back to make it 2-1 after the first period on a goal by Jeff Diehl (Grand Rapids, Mich.) with 2:01 left in the period. The Beacons tied the game just 1:56 into the second period on a score by Robert Carbone (Bayside, N.Y.).
After the goal by Fritch at 9:54 gave the Mules (2-0) a 3-2 lead, Reber got his first goal of the season at 13:34. Fritch scored again at 17:23 and Michael Belliveau (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) got his first collegiate goal at 18:37.
Fritch and Mike Butler (Saint John, New Brunswick) had goals in the third period for Colby.
The Mules got 29 saves from Ben Grandjean (Waterford, Conn.), while UMass-Boston goalie Chris Testa (Massapequa, N.Y.) had 39 saves.
The Mules compete in the Colby/Bowdoin Face-Off Classic next Saturday and Sunday. Colby faces the United States Under-18 National Team in an exhibition game at Alfond Rink at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Mules then play Assumption College on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bowdoin.
