Men's hockey holds on to win season opener

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored his first two collegiate goals and sophomore goaltender Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) stopped 32 shots in net as the Colby College men’s hockey team opened the season with a 3-2 victory over University of Massachusetts at Boston on Friday night at Alfond Rink.

The Mules (1-0), who host Babson College at 3 p.m. Saturday, went ahead quickly when Karl Burns (Mequon, Wis.) tallied just 1:02 into the contest off assists from Jeoffrey Jarnot (Concord, N.H.) and Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.).

Doherty went to work at 7:36 of the first period on a power play goal off assists from Billy Crinnion (Smithtown, N.Y.) and first-year defensemen Jesse Lehman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.).

The Mules went up 3-0 after one period when Doherty scored with just five seconds to play in the period. Crinnion and Michael Belliveau (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) had the assists.

UMass-Boston (0-1) scored once in the second period and added the other goal in the final 20 minutes. Both goals came on power plays with a five-on-three advantage.

Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mo.) tallied at 6:13 of the second period from Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) and Kris Kranzky (Glendora, Calif.). The Beacons then made it tight when Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.) scored at 10:26 of the third period off a pass from Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill.).

McKinney made 17 of his 32 saves in the second period to earn his 16th career win at Colby. Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) stopped 23 shots for UMass-Boston, which plays at Bowdoin College at 4 p.m. Saturday.
