WATERVILLE, Maine --- The U.S. Under-18 National Team scored three goals in a span of 1:08 after Colby College had tied the game on the way to a 6-3 victory in a men's hockey exhibition game as part of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic on Saturday night at Alfond Rink.
Colby will play Assumption College at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bowdoin. The U.S. team plays against Bowdoin at 6:30 p.m. Colby had tied the game at 2-2 when T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) tallied at 3:45 of the second period. The U.S. team got goals from Mike Hoeffel (North Oaks, Minn.) at 4:11, Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) at 4:22 and Jimmy Hayes (Dorchester, Mass.) at 5:19 to quickly pull away. The U.S. squad added another goal by Jimmy Hayes at 18:03 to take a 6-2 lead into the final period. The Mules made it interesting when Kelley scored his second goal at 1:35 of the third period, but there was no scoring after that goal. Colby tied the game twice before the rush of goals in the second period by the U.S. After a national team goal by C.J. Severyn (Beaver, Pa.) at 3:42 of the first period, Colby's Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) scored at 5:14 to make it 1-1. The U.S. went ahead 2-1 at 13:04 of the opening period on a goal by John Albert (Concord, Ohio), only to see Kelley tie the game at 3:45 of the second period. Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) had 22 saves for the U.S., while Ben Grandjean (Waterford, Conn.) made 36 stops for Colby.
