WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's hockey team got off to a fine start in taking a 3-1 lead after one period, but the United States National Under-18 Team scored seven times in the final two periods to earn an 8-3 exhibition game victory in the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic on Sunday night.
Colby (1-2) led 2-0 after just 5:40 of play. T.J. Kelley (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored just 1:07 into the game off assists from Arthur Fritch (South Boston, Mass.) and Joe Rothwell (Unionville, Ontario) on the power play. Fritch then made it 2-0 at 5:40 off a pass from first-year player Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.).
David Warsofsky scored the first of his two goals on the night at 15:16 of the first period to put the U.S. team on the scoreboard.
Kelley, though, made it 3-1 after the first period when he tallied unassisted at 17:01.
The U.S. team made a goalie change to start the second period and did not allow a score in the final 40 minutes. Joe Cannata (Wakefield, Mass.) played the final two periods and made 11 stops.
Jordan Schroeder (LakeVille, Minn.) and Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had goals in the second period to tie the game 3-3 heading into the final 20 minutes.
The U.S. team went ahead for good when Ryan Grimshaw (Rochester, N.Y.) had a shorthanded goal at 4:37 of the final period. After a goal by Nick Pryor (Woodbury, Minn.) made it 5-3, the U.S. team tallied three times in the final 5:57 of the game to pull away.
In the other game Sunday, Bowdoin took a 5-2 win over Nichols College to win the tourney title. The Polar Bears had taken a 3-1 win over the U.S. team on Saturday at Bowdoin.
