WATERVILLE, Maine --- The best power play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference showed the fans at Alfond Rink a 5-for-9 effort with the extra man as the Colby College men's hockey team took a 5-0 win over Castleton State College on Friday night.

The Mules are 11-for-27 (41 percent) on the power play and lead the NESCAC in that team category. Colby was first heading into the week at 33 percent.

"We've had some nice power play goals, some ugly ones, and we've had some luck," Colby head coach Jim Tortorella said. "The one common thought we've had is that we won't get outworked on the power play."

Colby has won three straight games in moving to 3-2 overall, while Castleton falls to 1-3-1. The Mules have allowed just nine goals in five games.

"Every team wants to define themselves with some kind of personality," Tortorella said. "What I like about our team is how hard we work. We work hard in all the situations that mean something."

Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.) had two goals and two assists to lead Colby's offense, while junior goaltender Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) posted his second collegiate shutout with 27 saves.

Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored his second goal of the season at 8:14 on the power play from Chris Buonomo (Edison, N.J.) and fellow first-year player Michael Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.).

Hartigan, who has four power play goals this season, tallied at 17:58 of the first period for a 2-0 lead at the break. Billy Crinnion (Long Island, N.Y.) and Jeoff Jarnot (Concord, N.H.) had assists.

Crinnion had an assist on the next two goals. Hartigan scored his second goal at 8:48 of the second period with the extra attacker from Crinnion and Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.). Crinnion then teamed up with Hartigan for an assist on a Nelson goal at 17:50.

Colby captain Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta) closed out the scoring at 10:22 of the final period from Jarnot and Hartigan.

Justin Roethingshofer (Edmonton, Alberta) made 21 saves in the first two periods for Castleton and Arthur Hollinger (Homer Glen, Ill.) had two stops in the final 20 minutes.'s

Colby is back in action Saturday at home against Skidmore College at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, Castleton heads to Bowdoin College for a 4 p.m. game.
