BRUNSWICK, Maine --- Day one of the Colby College/Bowdoin College men's hockey series goes to the Polar Bears. Bowdoin (4-0-2) led 3-0 at one point on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Mules on Friday night. The two teams battle again Saturday at 7 p.m. at Colby's Alfond Rink.
Mike Corbelle and Tim McVaugh tallied in the first period to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 margin at the break. Mitch Dillon then tallied for Bowdoin at 12:27 of the second period for a three-goal margin.
Colby bounced back when Josh Reber tallied at 17:23 of the second period, but the Polar Bears got a goal from Mike Westerman at 18:03 to go back up by three goals.
Arthur Fritch tallied at 9:31 of the third period for Colby only to see Bowdoin's Bryan Ciborowski score into an empty net in the final minute of play.
Nick Smith had 33 saves for Bowdoin, while Colby goalie Ben Grandjean had 29 stops.
