BRUNSWICK, Maine --- A day after winning the key league contest between the two teams, the Colby College men's hockey team fell 5-3 in the rematch with Bowdoin College on Saturday night at Dayton Arena.
The Mules are 4-3 overall, but Colby did earn a 3-1 victory on Friday to pick up the New England Small College Athletic Conferece victory. Saturday's game was non-conference. Bowdoin opened the scoring as a power play chance resulted in the game's first goal. Colin MacCormack's initial shot was kick-saved by Cody McKinney. The rebound came to the stick of Mike Corbelle, who buried the loose puck into the cage for a 1-0 Bowdoin lead at 6:19. The Mules evened the score at 12:17 on a five-on-three power play chance. Josh Reber found T.J. Kelley open on the far post for a one-timer to deadlock the game at one apiece. Bowdoin regained the lead before intermission as Polar Bear first-year Ryan Leary netted the go-ahead tally to give the hosts a 2-1 edge heading into the first intermission. Bowdoin upped their lead early in the second frame, as Colin Hughes finished off a scrum in front of the net to make it 3-1 Polar Bears at 1:57. Colby scored twice in a 38-second span to tie the game later in the period. T.J. Kelley put home a power play goal at 13:34 before Wil Hartigan knocked home a backdoor goal at 14:12 to deadlock the contest at three heading into the final period. Bowdoin took the lead for good when David Ransom fired a shot from the blue line that was tipped high into the air. Ryan Blossom took control of the bouncing puck and scored for a 4-3 Polar Bear lead at 6:46. With just over six minutes remaining, Thomas Herd collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on McKinney, beating the rookie goalie backhanded inside the left post to make it 5-3. Rossi made 19 saves in the victory for Bowdoin and McKinney finished with 20 saves for the Mules.
