WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men’s hockey team scored with 29 seconds left to move within one goal, but Wesleyan University held on for a 2-1 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Mike Palladino (Litchfield, Conn.) stopped 32 shots in goal and held off Colby College in the final minutes for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals (4-16-1 overall, 4-12-1 NESCAC) scored both goals in the opening period and then got 12 stops from Palladino in the second period and 13 more in the final period. Colby broke the shutout with just 29 seconds left by using an extra attacker, but the Mules could not get the tying goal.
Wesleyan’s David Layne (Flourtown, Pa.) scored first at 4:51 of the first period off a pass from Tom Salah (Gloucester, Mass.). The Cardinals made it 2-0 at 6:25 when Jeff Beck (Warrington, Pa.) tallied off assists from A.J. Ferraro (New Canaan, Conn.) and Anthony DePietto (Westbury, N.Y.).
The Mules (5-14-3, 3-12-2) made it interesting when they pulled the goalie with about 1:30 to play. Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.) got the goal with 29 seconds to play from Billy Crinnion (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.).
