WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's hockey team is in the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs. That is the good news for the Mules. The bad news was a 7-3 loss at home to New England College on Friday night at Alfond Rink.
Niko Uola (Turku, Finland) had three goals, including the first goal just 1:07 into the opening period, as New England College pulled away for a 7-3 win over the Mules.
The Pilgrims improve to 10-12-2 overall heading into a 4 p.m. game at Bowdoin College on Saturday. The Mules, despite the loss, clinched a New England Small College Athletic Conference playoff bid after Connecticut College lost to Norwich University on Friday. The Mules, who play host to Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale, will be the eighth seed in the league playoffs.
NEC led 2-0 after the opening period on goals by Uola and Emil Alengard (Linkoping, Sweden), who tallied at 11:17. The Pilgrims scored the lone goal of the second period when Greg Jacques knocked in the first of his two goals on the night.
Colby appeared to be back in the game with a 3-1 deficit after Billy Crinnion (Long Island, N.Y.) scored on the power play just 1:09 into the third period. However, NEC took control again on an unassisted goal by Jarkko Leppanen (Tampere, Finland) at 6:37.
The Mules once again cut the lead to two goals at 4-2 when Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) tallied with 6:19 to play on a short-handed goal. Jacques got his second goal in timely fashion just one minute later on the power play. The Pilgrims received another goal just 19 seconds later from Uola and he added an empty net score with 50 seconds to play.
Jesse Lehman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the game for Colby with a power play goal with 34 seconds left.
Aaron Harvey (Milford, Nova Scotia) made 19 saves for the NEC victory.
