WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's hockey team will play a familiar foe in the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs after taking a 4-1 win over Saint Anselm College in the regular season finale at Alfond Rink on Saturday.
The Mules will be the eighth seed in the league tourney and will play at top-seeded Bowdoin College at 7 p.m. next Saturday in a conference quarterfinal game. Colby is 2-0 against the Polar Bears this year and the teams remain bitter rivals.
Billy Crinnion (Long Island, N.Y.) had three assists and Jim Lemonias (Hingham, Mass.) earned his first collegiate win in goal for Colby (11-8-4 overall, 7-8-4 NESCAC) as the Mules' nine seniors played at home for the final time.
Saint Anselm (12-10-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead when Nick Rossi (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied at 11:32 off passes from Andrew Kacz (North Dighton, Mass.) and John Penny (Shelton, Conn.).
The momentum of the Hawks' goal went quickly after first-year Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) tallied just 22 seconds later off assists from Crinnion and Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.).
Patrick Bursee (West Nyack, N.Y) scored the eventual game-winning goal less than two minutes later at 13:23 from a third straight assist by Crinnion and senior Jared Crittenden (Fairport, N.Y.).
Mike White (Miller Place, N.Y.), another Colby senior, made it 3-1 with the lone goal of the second period. His power play goal from Crinnion and Mike Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) gave the Mules some breathing room.
Senior captain Matt Strickland and White assisted on the final goal of the day from Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.) at 17:04 of the final period.
Lemonias made 16 of his 30 saves in the final period to keep Colby up 3-1 until the final goal late in the game.
