AMHERST, Mass. --- Colby College defensemen Tom McGinn and Scott Harff both scored for a second straight day as the Mules pulled out a key 3-2 win over Amherst College on Saturday in NESCAC men's hockey at Orr Rink.
Colby, which took a 4-4 tie at Hamilton on Friday night, moved to 8-9-2 on the season and 7-6-2 in conference play. Amherst falls to 9-7-4 overall and 7-5-3 in the league. The Mules are in sixth place in the league, but second place Middlebury has only a 7-4-3 record in the tight standings. Colby is 6-1-1 in the last eight games.
The scoring opened 17 minutes into the game when McGinn snuck a shot between the legs of Amherst goalie Cole Anderson, with assists going to first-years Jack Bartlett and Nick Lanza.
The second period began with the hosts scoring two goals in a span of 1:25, with Erik Hansen tying things up at 1:45 after taking a pass from Brian Safstrom. Mark Colp would give the Lord Jeffs a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 3:10 when he beat Colby goalie Cody McKinney over his blocker with a wrist shot.
Harff knotted the score at 2-2 on a power play goal 9:50 into the second period, putting home a rebound thanks to assists from Mike Doherty and McGinn. Doherty hit the pipe with 3:30 to play in the second, but the teams headed into the final period tied at two goals apiece.
After Colby's Patrick Bursee drilled the crossbar three minutes into the third, Spike Smigelski would finally break the deadlock when he beat Anderson high after taking a pass from Tommy Kader, who snagged the puck out of the air.
Amherst pulled Anderson with 1:03 to play but could not find a third goal. McKinney improved to 7-6-2 after making 23 saves against Amherst.
