WATERVILLE, Maine --- Michael Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored with just three minutes left in regulation as the Colby College men's hockey team battled to a 2-2 tie with seventh-ranked Amherst College on Saturday at Alfond Rink.
In a game where both goalies played key roles, only two players managed goals on the days. Smigelski scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season for Colby (10-5-4, 6-5-4 NESCAC), while Amherst's Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) also scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season.
Colby goalie Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) made 17 of his 33 saves in the second period and had a pair of stops in the overtime session. Amherst keeper Cole Anderson (Eckville, Alberta) was up to the task with five saves in overtime and nine in each of the three periods of play for 32 stops. Anderson helped the Lord Jeffs move to 14-3-3 overall and 9-3-3 in the NESCAC.
Smigelski scored from Patrick Bursee (West Nyack, N.Y.) and Michael Doherty (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) at 12:07 of the first period on the power play for the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes.
Brock scored two straight power play goals over two periods to put the Lord Jeffs up 2-1. Matthew Rhone (Dedham, Mass.) and Jamie Hawkrigg (Waterdown, Ontario) had the assists on both goals.
Bursee picked up his second assist of the day and Nick Kondiles (Lake Forest, Ill.) had the other assist on Colby's tying goal with three minutes to play.
The overtime session was an eventful five minutes, with each team taking a penalty during the session. Both goalies also stopped breakaway attempts when their team was on the power play. The Lord Jeffs were 2-for-6 with the extra man and Colby was 1-for-4.
