Men's lacrosse loses wild game to Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --- The Colby College men's lacrosse team managed seven man-up goals against 13th-ranked Wesleyan University, but the Cardinals held on for a 13-12 win over the Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference men's lacrosse Saturday.

Officials ejected four players --- three from Wesleyan and one from Colby --- from the game in the second quarter. The Cardinals led 3-0 after the first quarter, but Colby scored seven straight goals to make it 7-3. Six of the goals were in man-up situations after the ejections. Drew Piekarski scored three of his four goals in a span of 41 seconds.

Wesleyan (7-3, 5-1 NESCAC) settled down and scored the final two goals of the half to trail 7-5 at halftime. The Cardinals then scored the opening five goals of the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead. Wesleyan still led 12-8 with 13:35 remaining, only to see the Mules score four of the next five goals to get it to 13-12 with 5:43 left. Neither team managed a goal the rest of the way and Wesleyan escaped with the victory.

Whit McCarthy also had four goals for Colby (6-4 overall, 2-4 NESCAC). Caddy Brooks added two goals and two assists, Dana McNally dished four assists, and Todd Boertzel had one goal and two assists. Zach Goodnough had the other goal for the Mules.

Alex Farmer made nine saves in goal for Colby, which plays at Bowdoin on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another league game. The Mules, who went 7-for-10 in man-up situations, received seven ground balls apiece from James Brady, Brooks, and Farmer.
