BRUNSWICK, Maine --- The Colby College men's lacrosse team got off to a slow start in the opening half and fell 10-6 to Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Ryan Field.
The Mules fall to 6-5 overall and 2-5 in league play heading into Saturday's important home game at 1 p.m. with Connecticut College. Bowdoin improves to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.
After a scoreless first quarter, Colby took a 1-0 lead at 12:28 of the second period courtesy of a Mark Squicciarino goal. That would be the last lead of the game for the Mules, as Bowdoin held Colby scoreless for the next 23:05 and had five straight goals. Bowdoin scored three times in the final 2:30 of the opening half to take a 4-1 lead at the break.
The Polar Bears pushed their lead to 5-1 on a Rob Halliday tally with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Colby bounced back with a pair of goals, and Whit McCarthy closed the gap to 5-3 with a score with just 35 seconds remaining in the third.
Bowdoin scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to take a 9-3 lead. The Mules made a late run and got as close as 9-6 with 2:14 remaining.
Colby was led by two goals from Squicciarino and Dana McNally. Todd Boertzel and Caddy Brooks both had two assists.
Alex Farmer stopped nine shots for the Mules.
