AMHERST, Mass. --- Ben Joslin made nine saves for the Colby College men's soccer team, but fourth-seeded Amherst College went ahead 1-0 in the first half and then had two second-half goals in a 3-0 win in NESCAC quarterfinal round play Sunday.
The Mules finish the season at 7-7-1 overall after earning the fifth seed in the NESCAC tourney with a 4-5 conference record.
James Mooney gave Amherst a 1-0 lead at intermission when Thebe Tsatsimpe's shot was blocked and Mooney turned and found the upper corner at 20:49.
Colby's best scoring chance in the first third of the game came as Nick Aubin took a lofted pass in the box. Amherst goalie Lennard Kovacs came off his line and collided with Aubin, letting the ball drop in the box. Before the Colby forward could get a shot off, Sam Kaplan cleared the ball out of danger.
Early in the second half, the Colby offense put heavy pressure on Kovacs and the Amherst backline. In the 54th minute, Colby had a series of three quick shots from inside the six yard box, but Kovacs came up with two saves and the third was touched wide. Aubin and Peter Randall each were in on the play, picking up the two shots that Kovacs stopped, before Peter Williams put the rebound wide.
Despite some Colby protests for an offsides, Alejandro Sucre scored off a pass from Ian Rothkopf at 59:45 to make it 2-0. The Lord Jeffs then secured the game when Spencer Noon nailed a penalty kick with under four minutes to play.
Amherst (11-1-3) will play Middlebury College this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a league semifinal game at Bowdoin College. Wesleyan will take on the Polar Bears in the other game at 11 a.m.
