HARTFORD, Conn. --- John Gardner posted a shutout in his first varsity collegiate start and Nate Seiberling had the only goal of the game as the Colby College men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 victory at Trinity College on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
The Mules (1-0 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) and the Bantams (0-1, 0-1) played a nearly identical game as last year when Trinity held on for a 1-0 win on the Colby Soccer Field. Seiberling scored just 1:16 into the second half for the game-winning goal this year, while the Bantams tallied 4:22 into the second half of last year's game.
"We created some great chances, cashed in on one, and played relentless team defense," Colby head coach Mark Serdjenian said. "It's a good way to start NESCAC play."
Nick Aubin passed the ball up the middle of the field and Seiberling outran a Bantam defender to the ball, before shooting over the right shoulder of Trinity junior goalkeeper Grant Schonberg from 15 yards away on the right wing.
The Bantams, ranked ninth in New England, had a sizable 14-7 shot advantage over the Mules, but Colby did have a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
Trinity's closest chance to tie came midway through the second half when Michael Stankiewicz shot the ball on the ground past Gardner, but just wide of the left post.
In the first half, Schonberg helped keep the game scoreless with a diving save of a point-blank attempt by Aubin 15 minutes into the contest and left his feet to stop another close Mule shot moments later.
Gardner had four saves to post the shutout, while Schonberg notched six stops, including another diving stop of a nearly-identical Seiberling attempt shortly after the Colby goal.
Colby plays host to Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
