WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's tennis team moved to 1-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 6-3 victory over Wesleyan University on Sunday. The Mules are 4-3 overall, while Wesleyan falls to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. "It was a great way to end spring break," Colby's Phillip Zunshine said. "We played well and we were able to finish off tough matches." Dan Freeman was a straight sets winner at second singles and teamed with Matthew Mantikas for an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Mantikas coasted to an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles. The Mules won two of the three doubles matches, with Trip Smith and Than Moore holding tough for an 8-6 win at the third spot. "The key for us today was winning at second and third doubles," Colby head coach Doanh Wang said. "Winning those gave us the momentum for the singles. We're a young team, but we competed like veterans today." Zunshine had the match of the day with his 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4) win over Donald Kleckner at fourth singles. Zunshine was down in the third set and battled back to force the tie-breaker. Joe Albano had the other singles win for the Mules. "This was a big NESCAC win for us," Colby captain Bobby Post said.
The Mules will have some time off before playing at Hamilton College on April 10 in another league match. Colby 6, Wesleyan 3 Doubles 1: Jeff Legunn/Michael Piderit, W, d.
