Schuman earns trip to semifinals at Middlebury tourney

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- Colby College's Zack Schuman made it to the 'B' flight singles semifinal round and nearly got to the title match at the Middlebury College Men's Tennis Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

Schuman took a 7-5, 6-4 win over second-seeded Tyler Anderson of Bowdoin College in an opening round match. He then beat another Maine rival with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Mike Sherman of Bates College in a quarterfinal match. Schuman took a 7-5 win in the opening game of the semifinal match against Middlebury's Andrew Thomson, but then lost 6-2 in the next set and fell 14-12 in a tough pro set to decide the match.

Tim Fuhriman had one singles victory for Colby, taking a 6-3, 3-6 (10-7) win over Skidmore College's T.J. David in the 'B' flight singles opening round. Fuhriman then fell 6-4, 6-4 to Middlebury's Andrew Lee in a quarterfinal match.

Nick Rosen-Wachs earned a 6-4, 6-4 win in the 'D' flight singles over Bowdoin's Drew McDonald in the first round. Rosen-Wachs lost 6-4, 6-3 in his quarterfinal match to Skidmore's Jeremy Hogan.

In 'A' flight doubles play, Brody Saunders and Bryan Brown took a 8-2 win against Bowdoin's Alex Caughron and Tyler Anderson in the first round. The Colby pair then lost a tough 9-7 match to Middlebury's Kevin Bergesen and Thomson in a quarterfinal match.

Brown lost 6-4, 6-3 to top-seeded Brian Marsden of Trinity College in the 'A' flight singles first round, while Brown lost to eventual champion Alex Scott of Middlebury by 6-1, 6-4 scores.

In 'C' flight singles, Tom Gildersleeve dropped a close 3-6, 5-4 (10-7) match to Wheaton College's Brad Dressler in the first round. Alex Chin lost 6-4, 6-4 to Skidmore's Dane Pfeiffer in his match. Meanwhile, Griffin Richards lost a tight 5-7, 6-3 (10-6) match to Trinity's Joe Mcleman in 'D' flight singles.

Schuman and Gildersleeve lost 8-1 to Trinity's Gautam Samarth and Brett Ramsay in the 'A' flight doubles. Colby's teams of Richards and Mather Neill, and Fuhriman and Chin also lost in 'B' flight doubles play.
