LEWISTON, Maine --- First-year Matt Carroll made the semifinal round of the 'D' flight and joined forces with classmate Jason Ottomano to make the semifinals of the 'B' flight doubles at the Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational at Bates College on Saturday.
Carroll won 6-2, 6-2 over a player from Brandeis in the first round and then defeated the second seed from Vassar by a 6-4, 6-3 count in a quarterfinal match. He will play on Sunday in a semifinal match. Jack Bryant also won his opening round match by 6-3, 7-6, but information on his quarterfinal round match was not available.
Ottomano and Carroll took an 8-4 win in the first round of 'B' flight doubles and then won a tough 9-7 match against a Skidmore duo in the quarterfinals. In other 'B' doubles, Robert Yee and Luke Martin lost 8-6 to an Amherst pair in the opening round.
Ottomano took a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 pro-set win over a Brandeis player in the first round of the 'C' singles flight, but his quarterfinal information was not available. Matthew Mantikas won 6-3, 7-5 over a Bates player in his first round match and then fell 6-1, 6-4 to a Skidmore player in the quarters.
In 'A' singles, Tom Kimball notched a tough 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 (pro-set) victory over a player from Brandeis in the first round. He then fell 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to a Bates player. Than Moore fell 6-1, 6-2 to a Bates player in the opening round.
Michael Johnsen lost 1-6, 6-2, 10-4 (pro-set) in his first round match against a Trinity player at 'B' singles, while Joe Albano fell 6-1, 6-3 to his Brandeis opponent.
In 'A' doubles, Kimball and Johnsen took an 8-5 win over a Brandeis team and then lost 8-4 in the quarters to a squad from Skidmore. Meanwhile, Albano and Mantikas won 8-6 over a duo from Amherst before falling to a Brandeis duo in the quarterfinal match.
