WATERVILLE, Maine --- Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine), fresh off his solid finish at the Eastern Cup last weekend, placed ninth in the 10-kilometer freestyle event for the Colby College men’s Nordic ski team on the first day of the Saint Michael’s Ski Carnival on Friday.
The Colby men placed fourth out of 10 teams in the event with 75 points and were just two points away from third place. Meanwhile, the Colby women had a strong finish by placing fifth out of 10 teams with 64 points.In alpine skiing, the Colby men placed seventh and the women’s team was eighth.
Nick Kline (South Portland, Maine) placed 11th for the Colby men’s Nordic team in 29:00.5 as the Mules had four skiers in the top 23. John Swain (St. Paul, Minn.) was 20th in 29:32.0 and Matt Briggs (Concord, Mass.) was 23rd with a time of 29:46.0. Sam Mathes (Rome, Maine) was 34th in 30:15.9.
For the Colby women’s Nordic team, Kathleen Maynard (Jackson, N.H.) took 14th in the 5-kilometer freestyle race in 16:29.0 and Amanda Ivey (Oxford, Maine) placed 16th in 16:50.7.
In the overall standings after the Nordic competition, the Colby men and women were in fourth place out of 10 teams with 139 points. Colby finished the day in seventh place overall with alpine and Nordic scoring combined.
Joshua Kernan (Shelburne, N.H.) took 14th place in the giant slalom in a two-run total time of 1:51.93 for the Colby men’s alpine team. Jody Centauro (Beaconsfield, Quebec) placed 21st in 1:52.67 and Christian Talmage (Kingfield, Maine) was 24th in 1:53.73.
Ashley Best (South Salem, N.Y.) had the top giant slalom finish for the Colby women in 2:01.28 over two runs. Julia Peck Coffin (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) took 26th in 2:03.11.
