Nordic teams have solid days at home

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine --- The Colby College men’s Nordic team finished in a tie for fourth place and the women were fifth overall in the mass start competition at the Colby Ski Carnival/Eastern Championships at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center on Saturday.

The Colby men had 82 points and finished in a tie with Bates College. Dartmouth won the 20-kilometer event with 132 points. Meanwhile, the Colby women were fifth with 78 points to edge Williams College (77) and finish behind fourth place University of New Hampshire (83). The Dartmouth women also had 132 points to earn the victory.

Colby had three skiers in the top 19 as Matt Briggs was ninth with a time of 55 minutes, 15.3 seconds. Sam Mathes placed 16th for the Mules in 56:13.3 and Silas Gill had a 56:54.6 to place 19th.

Lucy Garrec once again led the Colby women by placing eighth in 48:53.3, while teammate Kathleen Maynard was 17th in 50:03.3.

The skiers who qualify will take next weekend off before competing at the NCAA Championships from March 11-14 at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine.
