Nordic men capture win at Eastern meet

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- The Colby College men's Nordic team won an event for the fourth time this season and this one was the biggest and best so far, a victory at the Eastern Championships at Middlebury College on Friday in Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association skiing.

The Mules scored 120 points to win the 10-kilometer free technique race on the first day of competition. Dartmouth College was a close second with 118 and Middlebury took third with 112 in the 11-team field.

Colby first-year skier Wyatt Fereday made the most of his first race at the Eastern Championships by placing second with a time of 22 minutes, 42.1 seconds. Sylvan  Ellefson of Bates College won the event in 22:22.2.

Nick Kline placed seventh with a 23:00.4, Silas Gill was ninth in 23:02.6, Sam Mathes added an 11th in 23:08.2, and Matt Briggs was 16th in 23:34.9.

The Mules had never won an event at a ski carnival before this season, but now own four victories, three seconds, two thirds, and two fourths.

Kathleen Maynard placed 15th in the women's 5K free technique with a time of 14:23.0 to help Colby place eighth overall.
