WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College field hockey and women’s soccer teams will each be put to the test against unbeaten teams in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference playoffs Sunday. The eighth-seeded field hockey team will play at top-seeded Tufts University at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on Jumbocast (http://www.jumbocast.com/index.php). Meanwhile, the eighth-seeded Colby women’s soccer team heads to top-seeded Williams College for a 12:30 p.m. start. Both Colby teams gave their quarterfinal opponents good games during the regular season. Field hockey (5-9 overall, 2-7 NESCAC) only trailed nationally fourth-ranked Tufts by a 1-0 score at halftime and that goal came with just two seconds to intermission on a penalty stroke. The Mules then went the first 10 minutes of the second half without allowing a goal before Tufts finally pulled away for a 5-0 win. Tufts (14-0 overall, 9-0 NESCAC) has given up some goals in league games this year. Bowdoin scored three times against the Jumbos on Friday, while Bates and Middlebury each scored twice in losses to Tufts. The Jumbos have been dominant in wins (10-1 over Wesleyan), but also have three one-goal conference wins and two victories by two goals. Women’s soccer (5-8-1 overall, 2-6-1 NESCAC) played arguably their best game of the season in losing just 1-0 at home to nationally top-ranked Williams. Colby allowed a goal about nine minutes into the contest and then kept the Ephs off the scoreboard. Mule goalkeeper Loni Pisani stopped 12 shots as Williams had a 24-7 shot advantage. Williams is 13-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the conference, with the lone blemish a 1-1 tie against Amherst. However, Williams has scored just four goals in their last four league games. The Ephs own three 1-0 wins (including the victory over Colby) and the 1-1 tie with Amherst. 2008 NESCAC FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP Quarterfinals - Sunday, November 2 at Higher Seeds No. 8 Colby at No. 1 Tufts - 1:00 p.m. No. 7 Bates at No. 2 Bowdoin - 1:00 p.m. No. 6 Williams at No. 3 Middlebury - 1:00 p.m. No. 5 Trinity at No. 4 Amherst - 1:00 p.m. Semifinals - Saturday, November 8 at Highest Remaining Seed 11:00 a.m./1:30 p.m. Championship - Sunday, November 9 Semifinal winners - 12:00 p.m. 2008 NESCAC WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP Quarterfinals - Sunday, November 2 at Higher Seeds No. 8 Colby at No. 1 Williams - 12:30 p.m. No. 7 Wesleyan at No. 2 Amherst - 12:30 p.m. No. 6 Trinity at No. 3 Middlebury - 12:30 p.m. No. 5 Bowdoin at No. 4 Tufts - 12:30 p.m. Semifinals - Saturday, November 8 at Highest Remaining Seed 11:00 a.m./1:30 p.m. Championship - Sunday, November 9 Semifinal winners - 12:00 p.m.
