WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Katrina Gravel (Peabody, Mass.) and Cassi Knight (Carlisle, Mass.) were both named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association New England All-Region Team on Tuesday.
Gravel and Knight are heading to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this Saturday at Highland Hills, Ohio, near the campus of Baldwin-Wallace College. The event will be a 6-kilometer race at the Highland Park Golf Course at 11 a.m.
The NCAA invited 32 teams --- 16 automatic bids and 16 at-large --- for the meet. Gravel and Knight are two of 56 runners not part of a team bid from each region who were invited by the NCAA to compete.
Gravel has been Colby's top runner all season and placed ninth at the NCAA New England Region Qualifier last Saturday. She had a time of 22 minutes, 5.5 seconds over the 6K course at the region meet. Gravel earned All-New England Small College Athletic Conference honors after taking 10th at the league meet. She won the Maine State title earlier this year and placed 77th at the Open New England event.
Knight just missed All-America honors last year after placing 36th at the national meet (top 35 earn honors), while Gravel placed 49th in the race. Knight has made great strides after missing nearly the entire season with an injury. She came back to earn All-NESCAC honors after taking 13th place in the conference meet and then was 13th again at the NCAA New England Region Qualifier in 22:10.5.
